Watkins Glen State Park: A Gorge-ous Adventure That Made Our Top 5 List

August 2025 • Watkins Glen, New York

After exploring countless parks, gorges, and mountains across Canada and the US during our RV adventures, we don't throw around "top 5" rankings lightly. But Watkins Glen State Park's gorge trail? It absolutely earned its spot among our most unforgettable hikes.
Why This 2.2-Mile Trail Blew Us Away
This isn't your typical nature walk. The 400-foot deep gorge, carved by ancient glaciers, creates a natural wonderland where Glen Creek tumbles through 19 waterfalls and spillways. What makes this trail truly special isn't just the 800+ stone steps (don't worry, there's a shortcut!) – it's the incredible variety of perspectives you get as you wind through different levels of the gorge.

Unlike most scenic spots where you're stuck looking down from the top or craning your neck from the bottom, Watkins Glen puts you right in the action. Stone bridges carry you over rushing water, paths zigzag up and down the gorge walls, and yes – you can actually walk behind some of the waterfalls! It's like nature's own theme park, minus the crowds (if you
time it right).

A Tale of Two Seasons
We first hiked this gorge two years ago in June when water levels were impressively high – the waterfalls were absolutely thunderous. Returning in August, we found much lower water levels, which initially left us a bit disappointed. But you know what? The gorge revealed a completely different personality. With less water rushing through, we could see more of the intricate rock formations and geological details that make this place so special.
Sometimes nature's quieter moments are just as beautiful as her dramatic ones.
Smart Strategies for Your Visit
The Shuttle Secret: For just a few dollars, you can park at the bottom and take a shuttle to the top, making your hike mostly downhill. This is a game-changer if those 800 stairs sound intimidating – and honestly, even if they don't, why not save your energy for enjoying the scenery?
Timing is Everything:
Here's the thing about being the most visited state park in the US for 2025 – summer crowds can be intense. But we discovered the magic formula: Wednesday evening after 5 PM on a day threatening rain. Light crowds, easy parking, cooler temperatures, and the overcast skies actually enhanced the gorge's moody atmosphere. Plus, we stayed completely dry!
Beyond the Gorge
Don't miss exploring the broader Finger Lakes region while you're here. The area is dotted with pristine lakes, charming small towns, and rolling farmland that perfectly captures upstate New York's rural beauty. (We'll skip the wineries since we don't drink, but ice cream shops? Now we're talking!)
Our Honest Take
Even with lower water levels on our August visit, Watkins Glen State Park delivered an absolutely spectacular experience. The combination of accessible adventure, stunning natural beauty, and well-maintained trails makes this a must-visit for RVers and day-trippers alike.
