Our Bar Harbor adventure began just minutes after leaving our cozy stay at KOA Island side Campground. As we drove through Mount Desert Island, we were instantly charmed by the rows of Victorian-era homes—some meticulously restored, others delightfully weathered—lining the streets. Dating back to the 1880s–1930s, these historic gems felt like pieces of living art, setting the perfect tone for our coastal getaway.

A Walkable, Food-Lover’s Paradise

Bar Harbor’s downtown is compact, walkable, and brimming with tourist-friendly shops and eateries. Unsurprisingly, lobster is the star here—you’ll find it in every form imaginable: lobster mac & cheese, lobster quesadillas, hot buttered lobster rolls, chilled lobster salad rolls… the list goes on. We happily ate our way through town, balancing indulgence with (somewhat) healthier choices—though I’m convinced wild Maine blueberry pie counts as a superfood. Right?

Our Favorite Eats:

Sidestreet Café ([Website](https://www.sidestreetbarharbor.com)) – A solid menu with reasonable prices. Our top picks:

Lobster Mac & Cheese (Rich, creamy, and packed with chunks of lobster)

Clam Chowder (Classic New England comfort food)

Lobster Quesadilla (Unexpected but delicious)

Warm Blueberry Pie à la Mode (The perfect sweet ending)

Galyn’s ([Website](https://www.galynsbarharbor.com)) – A local staple since 1986, housed in a historic 1890s building with waterfront views. Must-tries:

Hot Butter Lobster Roll (Buttery, tender, and generously stuffed)

Blueberry-Apple Cobbler (A fruity, crumbly delight)

Agamont Park: The Best Seat in Town

One of our favorite spots was Agamont Park—a sprawling green space overlooking Frenchman Bay and the bustling town pier. We loved lounging in the grass, soaking up the sunshine, and watching boats glide in and out of the harbor. It’s the ideal place to pause, relax, and take in the coastal beauty.

Final Thoughts: Charming but Crowded

We adored Bar Harbor’s quaint shops, fantastic food, and stunning views, but the tourist crowds and parking headaches were a downside.

Pro Tip: Use the ParkMobile app to pay for parking remotely (and avoid tickets!). Learn from my mistake: I accidentally entered the wrong license plate and got slapped with a $50 ticket, even though I had time left. Thankfully, the Port Authority took pity on me (after a friendly scolding) and waived the fine. Phew!

Verdict?

Bar Harbor is a must-visit for its charm and seafood, but if you prefer quieter escapes, aim for off-peak hours or seasons.   Or do as we did, and head for the smaller, charming towns within an hour drive time from Bar Harbor!
