A quiet dusk hike near the Many Glacier entrance in Glacier National Park started out perfectly—waterfalls, a snowshoe rabbit, a “stalker deer,” and even a bull moose by the lake. Then I got separated from Manny (and the bear spray) and came face-to-face with a huge brown bear on the trail just yards away. What happened next was a long, tense wait in the dark—and a reminder that “easy hikes” can change fast.
