One of the unexpected highlights of our time in Waterton Lakes National Park wasn't a hike or a scenic drive—it was spending a day at the beautiful Waterton Lakes Golf Course.Mountain golf is always special, but Waterton offers something quite different from many of the famous mountain courses we've played.Most mountain golf courses wind their way through valleys and forests, with each hole offering a different view. Waterton Lakes Golf Course sits on a broad plateau completely surrounded by the towering peaks of the Canadian Rockies. From nearly every hole you are immersed in panoramic mountain scenery, creating a peaceful feeling that stays with you from the opening tee shot until you finish on eighteen.It truly feels like golf inside a national park.

Walking the Course

We decided to walk the course—a decision we mostly enjoyed.While the course sits on relatively open terrain, don't let that fool you. There are several significant elevation changes, particularly on the back nine. By the time we reached holes 15 through 18, I was definitely feeling the miles and found myself taking several short breaks to catch my breath.The walk was worth it for the scenery, but if we return—and I certainly hope we do—I would probably walk the front nine and rent a cart for the back.

A Relaxed Pace

One of the advantages of visiting in late May was how uncrowded everything felt.We never waited on a group ahead of us and never felt rushed by golfers behind us. The relaxed pace allowed us to stop often, enjoy the mountain views, take photographs, and simply appreciate where we were. It was one of those rounds where the experience became just as memorable as the golf itself.

Clubhouse & Amenities

The clubhouse has everything most traveling golfers need:

·       Fully stocked pro shop

·       Licensed restaurant and lounge

·       Outdoor patio overlooking the course

·       Practice putting greens

·       Club and cart rentals

One tip we heard repeatedly—and wish we'd had more time to enjoy—is that the clubhouse serves an excellent breakfast before morning tee times.Unlike many larger resort courses, there is no driving range, but the practice greens provide a nice place to loosen up before your round.

Final Thoughts

Waterton Lakes Golf Course may not receive the same international attention as some of Alberta's larger resort courses, but that's part of its charm.The spectacular mountain setting, relaxed atmosphere, and enjoyable layout make it a wonderful addition to any visit to Waterton Lakes National Park.If you're already planning to spend several days exploring the hiking trails, wildlife, and breathtaking scenery, consider setting aside one morning for eighteen holes. Even if your score isn't memorable, the views almost certainly will be.
