Cascade Falls – The Waterfall We Couldn’t Stop Looking At

Cascade Falls is in your face everytime you get near Banff

One of the most recognizable sights in Banff isn’t a mountain or a lake—it’s Cascade Falls.

As you drive into and out of the Town of Banff, your eyes are naturally drawn to the ribbon of water tumbling down the mountainside. It almost looks as though it appears out of nowhere, cascading down the face of Cascade Mountain. During our stay, we drove past it nearly every day, always admiring it from a distance.

Then one day we decided to see it up close.

A Short Hike…That Doesn’t Feel Short

The trail to the lower section of Cascade Falls is just under a mile each way, but don’t let the distance fool you. The hike climbs about 420 feet in less than a mile, so it’s uphill almost from the moment you leave the trailhead.

Adding to the challenge is the footing. Much of the trail is covered with loose gravel and rocks that shift beneath your feet, making both the climb and the descent more difficult than the numbers suggest.

It isn’t a long hike—but it definitely earns your effort.

The Reward

Standing beside the lower falls is an entirely different experience than simply viewing them from town. You can hear the roar of the rushing water, feel the cool mist, and even reach out to touch the cascading water.

Looking back down the mountain also provides beautiful views across Banff and the surrounding valley, giving you an entirely new perspective on the town below.

We briefly considered scrambling farther up toward the next tier of the falls, but the loose rocks and unstable footing convinced us it was wiser to stop where we were. Sometimes the best adventure is knowing when not to push your luck.

A Different View Every Time We Drove By

One of our favorite parts of this hike actually came afterward.

For the rest of our stay, every time Manny and I drove into or out of Banff and looked up at Cascade Falls, we couldn’t help but smile. It wasn’t just another beautiful waterfall anymore—we had stood beside it, felt its power, and experienced it from a perspective most visitors never do.

Sometimes the best memories come from taking the time to explore what everyone else simply drives past.
