Johnston Canyon Hike: A Banff “Always-Do-It” Waterfall Walk

Johnston Canyon is one of those Banff classics we keep coming back to. It’s popular (very), but it’s also genuinely spectacular: a walk through a narrow canyon with steel bridges and catwalks that hang over rushing water, leading you from one waterfall view to the next.

This was our third time hiking Johnston Canyon in the last five years, and it’s still high on my “always do it” list when visiting Banff National Park.

What the Trail Is Like

One of my favorite parts of Johnston Canyon is how the views keep changing. The canyon twists and turns, cutting through solid rock, and every bend gives you a new angle—down into the water, across the canyon walls, or straight toward the next waterfall.

It also has a funny way of convincing people they’ve reached “the end.” You’ll hit a waterfall, the trail seems to turn away from the canyon, and a lot of hikers assume that’s the start of the Ink Pots trail—so they turn around.

We always press on.

A little farther up (and a little more uphill), you’re rewarded with what I think is the best waterfall in Johnston Canyon.

The Waterfall Moment You Don’t Rush

This is one of those spots where you don’t immediately reach for the camera—you stop and take it in.

From the viewing area, you can literally feel the spray. The platform takes you out on a little peninsula so you can get a better view, and it’s the kind of place that makes you pause, breathe, and just listen to the water.

The Walk Back Down (Don’t Speed Through It)

Even though it’s the same path, the walk back down feels different. While a lot of people hurry downhill, we like to slow down and revisit a few key viewing spots on the way back.

Johnston Canyon is popular for a reason—but for us, the secret is simple: go later in the day and enjoy it when the canyon feels a little more like nature and a little less like a crowd.

Timing Matters (Crowd-Saving Tip)

Johnston Canyon is extremely popular, and during peak summer hours it can feel crowded enough that people complain they can’t even enjoy the views.

Our best tip: go after 7:00 PM.

·      Summer light stays bright well into the evening

·      Parking is almost empty

·      You’ll still see some hikers, but it feels far more relaxed and enjoyable

Quick Summary

·      Why we love it: Constant canyon views, dramatic rock walls, and waterfalls that feel earned—but the trail is still very doable.

·      Distance: Roughly 5 miles round trip with gentle ups and downs as the trail follows the canyon.

·      Optional add-on: You can continue to the Ink Pots if you want a longer day.

Parking is right at the canyon, and the hike starts with views almost immediately—no long lead-in before the scenery kicks in.
