Part of our Wildlife Spotting Series at Travel Well, Live Well, Adventure Often!
Some say the best things in life require a little extra effort, and wildlife viewing in Yellowstone proves this perfectly. While millions of visitors catch glimpses of bison and elk along the main roads, we've discovered that the real magic happens when you venture out before dawn, armed with patience and the right equipment.

Location Spotlight: Lamar Valley & Slough Creek
Known as America's Serengeti, this area has become our favorite wildlife viewing destination in the park. Here's what we've learned:

Best Viewing Times:
- Prime Time: 5:00 AM (yes, really! It’s so worth it and I am not an early riser
- Magic Hours: Dawn and dusk
- Season: Year-round with varying wildlife activity – For bears with cubs May - June is best.
Our Wildlife Encounters:
- Wolves at Slough Creek den site (scope is helful)
- Up-close wolf sighting (feeding on carcass near the road)
- Multiple bear sightings
- Coyotes and foxes roaming the valley
- Regular elk and bison viewing
Equipment Evolution:
A funny confession: Our first visit was almost equipment-free (rookie mistake!)
- Visit 1: Just our eyes (not recommended!)
- Visit 2: Quality binoculars
- Current Setup: Professional spotting scope (our anniversary gift to ourselves - worth every penny!)

Travel Well Tip: Split your viewing into morning and evening sessions. Use the middle of the day for rest - you'll need it!
