Oceanside RV Park - Port Au Choix

Oceanside RV Park, Port Au Choix, NL

Location:

Oceanfront paradise—literally directly on the beach with stunning water views!

Management:

Operated by the Lions Club

Cost: $35 (CAD) Cash per night for 30-amp electric and water hookups

Oceanside RV means Ocean Front Parking!

Internet:

They offer WiFi (better signal closer to the source shed), but Starlink works perfectly here with no obstacles

Reservations:

Phone calls work best, though email is possible—just don't expect quick responses. For years this was a "drop-in" park with about 25 serviced spaces plus additional boondocking options, but they do accept reservations now.

The Experience:

We absolutely loved this RV park (aka "parking lot on the water")! Sitting in our RV with ocean views from almost every window was pure magic. The short drive to Point Riche Lighthouse delivered incredible wildlife encounters—we spotted caribou and foxes, enjoyed fantastic hiking, and had a late lunch at the Anchor Restaurant.

Weather Reality Check: This is the open ocean, so expect lots of wind! We actually pulled our slides in one night when howling gusts exceeded 35 mph with sustained 25 mph winds for hours. Come prepared for the elements.

Cat's Review:

It's about us
It's about us

"Spaces are too narrow"

we don't like the comings and goings so close to our tunnels. Also, we don't LOVE the configuration of a straight line, but that was the best choice given the narrow space.

"Bad Weather"

The wind was annoying and the rain even more—can you do something about that?

"What you halfway did right"

Did love that you tucked our low tent under the picnic bench. Why don't you do that more often?

"Thank you - kind of"

for leaving the tunnel system open last night, and it was about time you slowed that wind down a bit and got rid of the rain…what took you so long?"

Local Attractions:

Point Riche Lighthouse and Trails

This is one of the best reasons to come. See the Trail review including the wildlife! Rich in history and heritage.

Point Riche Lighthouse Beautiful Sunsets Caribou Sighting

Torrent River Salmon Interpretation Centre and Fishway

This is a unique chance to see Salmon using an underground salmon ladder, built next to the falls, through the windows underground. There is also a 3km trail along the river.

Stores & Shops:

Very limited in the area which is part of why we love it! Population is approx 700.

Coleman's Grocery Store: Conveniently located right across the street

The Bakery: Open Saturdays only—a local gem worth timing your visit around

French Bread Store Experience: Here's where it gets interesting. This isn't actually about buying French bread. At 2:00 PM, they offer an "exhibition" of traditional baking—watching them prepare a large pan of rolls in their outdoor wood-fired oven. Then everyone gathers in the restaurant to share the fresh rolls with jam while listening to stories and tales from the owners. Cost: $12 CAD.

Our Take:

While the concept is charming and the rolls were fresh, We had our hearts set on buying some great, authentic french bread - so we were dissapointed.

Our Verdict:

If you can handle the wind and narrow spacing, this oceanfront location is unbeatable. The combination of stunning water views, convenient location to Point Riche attractions, and reasonable pricing makes it a solid choice. Just come prepared for typical coastal weather conditions.

Recommended Stay:

3 nights gives you plenty of time to explore the lighthouse, hiking trails, and local wildlife viewing opportunities.
